Shabbat Shalom 6/29/13 (Pinchas/Phineas)

Shalom mishpachah veh chaverim!

Our Torah portion this week is named Pinchas/Phineas (B’midbar/Numbers 25:10 – 30:1[29:40]) and is one of only six Parashot named after an individual. We were introduced to Pinchas last week but, in my opinion, he was overshadowed by the Balak/Bil’am mess. We know Pinchas was the son of El’azar and grandson of Aharon so he was in line to be a Cohen Gadol/high priest but at this point, he was just a “trainee”. Albert Einstein once said, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” Pinchas understood this and did what needed to be done. He stopped the public display of immorality which triggered a plague and killed 24,000. Did you notice no one else spoke up or stepped up to stop this man from the atrocity he was committing? I can see why Pinchas, in his righteous indignation chose to attack this blatantly disrespectful man and his harlot.

In every generation, The Almighty is looking to establish His B’rit Shalom / Covenant of Peace with those who will be radical fanatics for Him. Are we prepared to respond to our Creator – to pick up our spear and drive it through our own? Or will we just look sorrowfully on the sin of our brothers without the passion to stop the plague which is destroying them? Let ours be the generation willing to defend the holiness of The Almighty. May we be zealous enough to spill blood for the sake of righteousness.

There are SO many trails to go down. However, in an effort to keep it short, I’ll end with this. Verse 12 tells us, for his boldness, Pinchas was given a B’rit Shalom / Covenant of Peace. We are told , in order to be truly shalom (whole), a person has to be broken – contrite and humble in spirit. “This is the one I esteem, he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” (Yesha’yahu/Isaiah 66:2) May each of us strive to be as bold as Pinchas in our zealousness for the Holy One and may we also strive to be contrite and humble in spirit as we serve our Master.

Shabbat shalom veh shavuah tov, Batyah

Just wanted to share something Shomer and I were discussing Friday evening and Shabbat about the Pinchas Torah portion. As in each Torah portion, we always ask, “how is this relevant for us today since we are trying to walk out Torah.

We started with the Torah portion in Numbers 25:10. Then scriptures started rolling. Pinchas was in the line of the Levitical priesthood. He had such a Godly zeal within him to stop the plague which was on Israel. In this day and time, instead of “one” person, won’t it be a body standing together with the life of Yehovah flowing through them to rise up against the “Zimri’s” & Kozbi’s of this world; the ones standing against what Yehovah is doing and “moving to their own music” or “look at me”. This body of people, or priesthood will be full of Godly zeal within every fiber of their bodies and will use the two-edged sword, the Word, and the power of the Ruach within them to defeat the enemy today. They will have nothing else in mind but to restore His righteous kingdom. We know the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but they are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds. With our sword in hand, anointed by His Spirit, and girded with the loins of Truth with the helmet of salvation and the breastplate of righteousness, we have the power to defeat the hold of the enemy today on B’nai Israel and to break the plague. The scriptures which first came to mind were the Torah portion. Also, I remembered a chorus I grew up with. “We are persuaded that neither death nor life; nor any power, from below or on high; that’s in the future or in days gone by that can separate us from His love.” The scripture reference is Romans 3:38 (KJV).

In Rev. 1:6(CJB) “…who has caused us to be a kingdom, that is, cohanim for God, his Father, to him be the glory and the rulership forever and ever, amen.” And in 1st Peter 2:9 (CJB), it says, “But you are a chosen people, the King’s cohanim, a holy nation, a people for God to possess. Why? In order for you to declare the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
