IN THAT DAY / DAY OF THE LORD
Throughout the Bible, there are over 60 references to that one specific day called The Day of the Lord. This day is pivotal in the history of the world…past, present, and future.
In the list below, it is important to understand each reference deals with certain events and circumstances happening at the same time. The Father didn’t give everything to just one prophet when He gave information on the appearance of the Messiah prior to His first coming and the same holds true for the Day of the Lord. To understand fully what He has given us about that day, it is necessary to study all of it. Drawing conclusions from just a limited number of scriptures can easily lead to inaccuracies and building doctrine in this way obviously leads to false doctrine.
As in all prophetic study, it is absolutely necessary to ask the same questions a news reporter would ask: Who, what, when, where, and how. Most of the time nearly all, if not all, of these questions will be answered in the surrounding scriptures.
The other necessity is to understand the words used. As Brad Scott, the ancient language Biblical linguist, says, “Words mean something!” Too frequently students place modern definitions into their interpretations of scripture and destroy the true meaning. Important case in point: there is a difference in the terms “House of Israel” and “House of Judah.” Here is what Prof. C. A. L. Totten [1851–1908], of Yale University said about this difference,
“I can never be too thankful to the Almighty that in my youth he used the late Professor Wilson to show me the difference between the two houses. The very understanding of this difference is the KEY by which almost the entire Bible becomes intelligible, and I cannot state too strongly that the man who has not yet seen that Israel of the Scripture is totally distinct from the Jewish people, is yet in the very infancy, the mere alphabet, of Biblical study, and that to this day the meaning of seven-eighths of the Bible is shut to his understanding.”
Since so many of the In That Day prophecies deal with these two entities, it becomes obvious the Father is referring to End Times people groups whom He designates by these terms. Many other words and phrases are equally important to understand but these two are of paramount importance.
Finally, it is important to find as many definitions as possible within the scriptures themselves. As the Bereans in the book of Acts tested everything against the Scriptures, we need to do the same. Doing this, we need to remember there was no New Testament until the time Constantine directed his churchmen to collect the writings and letters we call the New Testament so he could have his own book to replace the one the Jews were using. Therefore we must remember “The Scriptures”, as referenced in the New Testament, were what is commonly called the Old Testament today.
